How It All Began

The following is an Interview with David L. Kern, editor of New Health & Longevity and special consultant to Apple Poly LLC, USA

(December 30, 2006)

How did your interest in apples begin?

It was a series of happy accidents, really. My partner Katrina was researching a surgical procedure in 2004 when she came across a study showing that polyphenols from apples reduced organ fat and increased muscle strength dramatically in lab animals. Since nothing else can really do that, she knew this was a breakthrough. We began looking into the research on apple phytochemicals, and were amazed to find almost 30 years of scientific data.

When Katrina got a look at the actual procyanidin molecule, she got really excited. “Come here and look at this,” she told me. “It looks like a giant sponge. This has to be a fantastic antioxidant.” We began looking for a source for procyanidin-rich apple extracts. Nobody had it in a bottle. We had to buy it in large quantities just to try some. So we did.

Model of procyanidin C1 moleculeWe started marketing the product (Apple PolyTM) in capsule form in 2005 for its remarkable antioxidant properties, as well as its potential to reduce abdominal fat. We began getting reports from users of strongly accelerated hair growth- especially from women who color their hair. They were noticing faster growth within weeks, and even complaining that they had to have their roots colored far more often.

I was vaguely aware of the published papers at the time showing hair growth effects of apple procyanidins. I began taking this possibility more seriously, and looking for more research. Eventually we uncovered several new studies, including clinical trials, showing clear evidence of hair regrowth, hair shaft thickness increase, and terminal hair increase produced by these specific phytochemicals, even in subjects with male pattern baldness. We set out to create an effective topical formula based on these clinical trials, and introduced it late in 2005.

There are some people who believe that antioxidants are very useful combating a broad rage of human illnesses. What do you think?

There is no question that antioxidants are absolutely vital to maintaining human health and youthful function. The research indicates that free radical activity is a factor in over 100 human diseases. Damage to the organism and its decline in function can be measured, studied and affected at the molecular level. It’s indisputable.

The soundness of the Free Radical Theory of Aging, proposed in 1950 by Denham Harman, MD- is overwhelmingly supported in 50+ years of research. The problem is this: you must have agents that are potent and available enough to affect the redox (oxidant/antioxidant) balance of the organism. They must be absorbed in doses that are biologically relevant.

Agents that are: 1) potent enough to affect the human body’s antioxidant balance, 2) able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, and 3) cause no collateral damage to the organism, are very recent developments. We have identified certain phytochemical agents with all of these qualities. The apple phytochemicals are the best so far, and more are on the way.

Male pattern baldness is very complex. How would the ultimate treatment strategy look, if you were to design it?

That’s a great question. In my view, the ultimate program for hair restoration must be a multidisciplinary approach.

The first thing to consider is diagnosis. The more we can find out about the exact cause (or causes) of an individual’s hair loss, the greater the chance of finding the proper agents to address the problem.

For instance, DHT inhibitors work for a percentage of men with male pattern baldness. If DHT is your problem, you will see results from pharmaceutical or natural approaches that inhibit DHT effectively. Unfortunately, this approach doesn’t work for everyone. I recommend finding out everything you can about the cause of your hair loss from a dermatologist.

Even for those who are helped by DHT inhibitors, there are many other factors to consider. Stress, nutrition, and environmental toxins all play a role in hair loss and regrowth. I encourage combination therapy. Taking the best from all of these areas- pharmaceuticals, phytochemicals, diet, stress reduction, and elimination of toxins- is the ultimate strategy.

How is your product for male pattern baldness produced, and can “anyone” manufacture a home version from apples?

Unfortunately, pouring apple juice on your head won’t work. The extracts we use are patented, highly concentrated plant chemicals. Each bottle of our product contains the equivalent of thousands of apples.

However, there are many things you can do at home, in terms of diet, nutrients, stress reduction, gentle stimulation of the scalp, etc. These are often overlooked. It’s a cumulative, additive approach.

For instance, adequate intake of monounsaturated fats can have a positive effect. I know of one dermatologist prescribing avocados once a day, with good results in her patients.

Polyphenols in green tea show beneficial effects on hair growth in lab animals. It’s fairly simple to add a cup or two of green tea to your daily regimen. Is it enough by itself? I don’t think so. But in combination with other therapies, it may help. There are plenty of other components of diet and lifestyle that anyone can do at home to promote hair growth. As isolated treatments, they may not make enough difference. Taken together, they can be a powerful strategy.

What I love about our apple products is that you can use them in combination with anything else that’s working for you to improve and accelerate results. They’re totally safe, and work along different pathways than just about any other therapy. The more things you can do to positively intervene in the hair growth cycle, the better.

How do these hair growth formulas compare to other products on the market?

As far as apple phytochemicals, there are no other products that compare. Some formulas use proanthocyanidins from grape seeds, which are weaker hair growth promoters, and far cheaper ingredients.

I don’t want to run down anyone’s products. If you find something that works- that slows your hair loss, accelerates your growth, and/or grows back some hair for you- use it. Keep using it. Get the most out of it. But don’t stop there, for goodness sake! Build on that success by implementing other methods in combination.

Start getting high doses of procyanidins in your diet every day. Use our products, or get hawthorn berries, which are fairly rich in procyanidins. Eat polyphenol-rich foods like yellow curry, cinnamon, pomegranate, ginger, berries, olives, green and black teas. Get chlorophyll from fresh vegetables, broccoli sprouts, and fresh water chlorella. When it’s time for sweets, eat the darkest chocolate you can buy, also rich in procyanidins. Get these natural chemicals into your body in meaningful amounts, and you will feel and see a difference.

The way I see it, everything I put in my mouth affects my health, my rate of aging, my hair growth in real time. The latest research indicates that certain foods and supplements actually affect the expression of your DNA. So if you think you’re “doomed” to baldness, or even cancer for that matter, you’re not. You can overcome your own genetic predisposition. But it may take more than just a single therapy or agent. I advocate large to massive doses of beneficial natural compounds that are proven safe, as a starting point.

Does your product show any efficacy on hair regrowth in the temple area?

Yes, we see growth at the temple in some individuals. Those on the products the longest are seeing the best results in hairline, crown, temple, eyebrow, eyelash, and frontal regrowth. After 18 months, we’re even seeing repigmentation in one client. Her hair has thickened dramatically, and is actually beginning to grow back in brunette, her natural color, after 20 years of gray. Her stylist thought she’d had a bad dye job, because it’s growing in tufts of color.

This client represents the “leading edge” of procyanidin therapy in the U.S. She’s been taking Apple PolyTM capsules every day, longer than anyone besides Katrina and myself. She takes them because they help her energy level, and her arthritis pain and swelling. Her hair regrowth is a “side effect” she never expected.

I want to make sure that everyone understands the importance of these results. There is nothing in the medical literature- nothing- that shows the ability to repigment hair. So what is happening? It seems that the procyanidins are actually returning the follicles to a more youthful state of growth and production.

In the case of this client, we can see that follicles which had been dormant are producing hair again. We can see an increase in hair shaft thickness. Her scalp is no longer visible through her thinning hair in front. And now, she has started growing pigmented, terminal hairs again. It seems that the procyanidins are actually reversing two symptoms of aging- thinning hair, and hair graying.

What do you see happening in the field of male pattern baldness in the next 10 years?

We’re on the doorstep of major advances in hair growth science and antiaging medicine. The best approach is to start right away to slow unwanted hair loss. Stay on top of the advancing science by paying attention to companies like Apple Poly LLC, who are formulating products from actual lab results, and dedicated to providing solid, science-based information on the latest hair growth studies and therapies.

Then, take advantage of new techniques as they become available. Use the best we have today, and get ready for even better approaches. Advances in hair growth science will continue right along with antiaging medical science.

Which independent studies support the benefits you claim your product
realizes?
Most of the science on procyanidins and hair loss is coming out of Japan from the Tsukuba Research Laboratories research group. They’ve now conducted four separate clinical trials on apple procyanidins in male pattern baldness subjects, all with positive results. We managed to secure laboratory photos from their latest trial, which you can see on our web site at: applepoly.com There’s a lot more science on procyandins and hair regrowth than most people realize. We know of eleven studies published to date. We make these available to our clients upon request.

Does this product also work for females suffering from baldness?
The science on female hair loss is inadequate. I think women get a bad deal in this regard. It appears that DHT inhibitors which are effective for some men don’t work for women, and may even be dangerous. Women often have thyroid issues that impact hair loss, which we don’t see in men. The whole cascade of hormones is quite different from women to men, and female hair loss is often linked with hormonal changes that occur in menopause.

But there is good news for women. Our field results indicate that procyanidins definitely help women with thinning hair. Some of our biggest successes to date are in female clients. Procyanidin therapy may be the first truly successful approach for hair loss in women.
